Why Rodent Infestations Are On The Rise
Philadelphia and Pittsburgh are frequently cited as being among the most rodent-infested cities in the US, and the annual number of reported rodent infestations all over the state has been increasing. When people hear the word “rodent” they naturally picture rats and mice, but other rodents, particularly moles and squirrels, are also becoming increasingly problematic as indoor pests in Pennsylvania, according to experts. Squirrel, mole, mouse and rat pest infestations have been plaguing homes and businesses throughout Pittsburgh during the past few years. The most heavily affected businesses include dollar stores, thrift stores, department stores, and of course, restaurants. The health department has received an unusually high amount of complaints about rodent pests in local businesses, which has led to many failed inspections and forced closures. However, business owners in Pittsburgh are not the only people in the city experiencing repeated and extensive rodent infestations, as pest control companies have reported that residential mouse and rat infestations have been skyrocketing.
Experts believe that rodent infestations in homes are increasing due to the relatively mild winters that have occurred over the past four years, but they also claim that some residents should do a better job of maintaining sanitary conditions in order to avoid attracting mice and rats indoors. Mice and rats have no problem gaining access indoors where they often congregate in inaccessible areas where their presence tends to go unnoticed until infestations become highly advanced, and therefore, difficult to manage. Mice can squeeze through dime-sized openings on the exterior walls of houses, and rats can fit through quarter-sized entry points in order to gain indoor access. While it may seem obvious, it is important that both homeowners and business owners keep their doors shut at all times. Businesses often become infested because loading dock doors are left open for long periods, and many homeowners leave their garage door open while unattended, especially while performing yard work. Mice and rats stay hidden in garages where they reproduce rapidly, which makes infestations highly likely to occur within homes, especially in homes with attached garages.
