Weird Wildlife that Are Real … Found in Greater Philadelphia; Star Nose Moles, Flying Squirrels & More
In most cities and states, the type of wildlife that is seen on a regular basis is generally the same. When you spot a critter out of the ordinary it can be exciting and you may wonder how it got there. Many species of wildlife needs to be in a particular climate to survive but that has not stopped some from adapting so that they can expand and survive in other areas.
Pest Control Technicians, Inc Lists Weird Wildlife Sightings In Philadelphia
Coyotes: You may think that a coyote would want to be in an area that has more heat and less cold harsh winters like closer to the west side of the US. That is normally true but coyotes have been seen around Philadelphia feeding on roadkill and rummaging through garbage cans. They have been spreading further and further for many years so it was only a matter of time before they adapt to the area. The coyote will normally stay away from humans but will come in close just to get into food that is left out.
Peregrine Falcon: One of the most wonderful wildlife to look up and see is a falcon. They are a majestic and a beautiful sight to see. In Philadelphia, they are now out in abundance. They were not always that way. They used to be nearly gone and with some effort from biologists and conservationists they were able to reintroduce them which was a success. Peregrine falcons normally nest on the tops of cliffs which in the city limits are not an option. Instead of a cliff they tend to find a spot to nest atop a large building.
Wild Turkey: There was a large group of wild turkeys that roamed the Philly area. The turkeys were in such an abundance that hunters would go after them with almost no limits. They were nearly gone from the area except for a small group that remained. They have now been reintroduced and they are again a main fixture out in the community. They have even been seen walking around the town and in between cars and buildings.
Star Nose Mole: One of the most unique and interesting wildlife that is found in the Greater Philadelphia area is a star nose mole. They are usually hanging out underground foraging for food. They have very large claws for digging and small tentacles that come out of their nose making it seem as if they have a large star on their face.
Flying Squirrel: The flying squirrel has this name due to the extra flap of skin along each side that allows it to glide far after a jump. They can’t actually lift off the ground into flight but they can be seen jumping between trees and buildings while they glide effortlessly. They are nocturnal so they stay asleep in the day and start their flight at night looking for food.
