How Opossums Invade Fenced-In Yards And How To Recognize Opossum Invasions
Several opossum species have been documented all over the world, but the Virginia opossum is the only marsupial species that inhabits the United States. Unlike raccoons, opossums are not widely considered to be adorable animals, as most people describe opossums as looking like large rats. Although opossums are abundant animals that have adapted to thriving in urban habitats, some people have never spotted an opossum before. While these people may be in the minority, opossums are not seen often around homes due to their nocturnal nature, but once everyone is fast asleep, opossum troublemaking begins in residential areas. Opossums frequently scavenge for food within residential trash bins, and the marsupials are not shy about spreading the contents of people’s trash all over their lawns in an effort to secure every edible item possible. However, opossums often damage lawn grass and gardens as well, sometimes causing homeowners serious economic costs.
Opossums are not picky about what they eat, but they prefer fruits, bugs and rotting animal carcasses. It is not uncommon for residents to find their yard-cultivated fruits missing or half-eaten within tattered garden beds. Opossums are also known for eating dog food, and they may make an effort to access garages and storage areas where dog food is kept. When homeowners find their trash strewn about, or their lawn grass damaged, or their gardens ransacked, they can be sure that an animal pest was responsible if a hole is dug out beneath their fence. However, possums usually enter backyards by climbing over fences rather than going to the trouble of digging a hole beneath a fence. When pest damage is noticed on fenced-in properties where no access hole can be found, opossums are the most likely culprits. That being said, opossums may dig holes in yards in an effort to locate grubs and worms, but skunks and raccoons are more likely than opossums to cause lawn damage of this sort.
