Why Are Longhorn Crazy Ant Infestations Exceedingly Difficult To Eradicate From Infested Homes
Many ant species are frequent home-invaders in Pennsylvania, and most of these ant pests will cause a serious nuisance within and around homes, and are likely to nest within wall voids, beneath floorboards and other inaccessible areas of a home. Other ant pest species in the state are more well known for inflicting stings and property damage, particularly lawn and structural wood damage. Earlier this year, officials with Penn State confirmed that various mammalian and insect pest species had established heavy populations on the University Park Campus where they became problematic for students and University employees. During 2018, the Office of Physical Plant received 245 calls from people complaining about ants on the campus, which far outnumbered complaints made about all other types of insect pests at the University. Many pest control professionals in the state claim that ants are the most frequently mentioned insect pests among residents.
Some of the most commonly encountered ant pests in Pennsylvania include pavement ants, odorous house ants, black carpenter ants, little black ants and Pharaoh ants. Another ant pest species in the state, Paratrechina longicornis, or the “longhorn crazy ant,” as the species is more commonly known, is an invasive species that has spread to every region of the eastern US and up into eastern Canada. This species has become notorious for establishing colonies in all areas of a structure, including the top floors of urban buildings. Many pest control professionals consider this ant species to be the most difficult ant pests to control within structures located in the eastern US. The longhorn crazy ant is capable of establishing nests within wall voids, beneath floorboards, and they are often found infesting enclosed areas in homes where hot pipes and plumbing can be found. Longhorn crazy ants are able of living within any environment where humans can be found, including vehicles, offices, hotel rooms, kitchen pantries, potted plants and in conditions ranging from extremely dry to excessively moist. Many researchers consider this ant species to be the most widely distributed ant species in the world, and they most likely originated from Asia.
