Mysterious Rat Invasion In Landisburg Has Numerous Residents Struggling To Eradicate The Rodents From Their Homes
The town of Landisburg located 30 miles northwest of Harrisburg is now under siege by thousands of rats. This may not seem like a big deal to residents of bigger cities, such as New York City and Boston, but Landisburg only contains several hundred residents living in a handful of neighborhoods. The town’s large-scale rat invasion became clear to residents earlier in the month when numerous rats could be seen flooding out of residential homes. Although the town’s sewer system seems to be playing a part in the massive rat invasion, pest control professionals and council members have yet to pinpoint the cause of the sudden influx of rats into the town. In an effort to control the town’s rat population, city council members have proposed a plan that requires the mutual cooperation of pest control professionals, public officials and residents.
Kenneth Morrison is a Landisburg council member as well as the head of the town’s wastewater treatment center. Morrison himself has witnessed large groups of rats flooding out of multiple homes located on West High Street and Carlisle Street, both of which are located near the town’s wastewater collection plant. The wastewater collection plant is a part of the sewer system, and initially, Morrison believed that the rats were being attracted to the West High Street neighborhood due to a nearby open vent-pipe leading into the sewer. However, the sheer abundance of rats in the town suggests that another cause must exist to explain their presence in neighborhoods.
Council members have posted fliers around Carlisle Street in order to raise awareness about the issue, and to assure residents that a solution is currently being formulated. The flier asks that residents be vigilant about reporting rat-sightings to local authorities so that pest controllers can be dispatched to an affected residential area as promptly as possible. The flier also notified residents about the strict enforcement of yard waste and trash removal as well as an effort by state officials to regularly monitor sewer lines to make sure that they are properly sealed. Pest control professionals have placed child-proof rat traps all over Carlisle Street as well. Unfortunately, however, the precise cause of the rat infestation has yet to be determined.
