How Homeowners Should Properly Remove Dead Rodents And Their Bodily Waste From Homes
Mice and rats are major nuisance pests within homes, garages, sheds, and other residential and urban structures. Of course, mice and rats also pose a health threat to residents, as they spread dozens of diseases to humans, both directly and indirectly. Even after homes have been cleared of all rats and mice, the nesting material, as well as the urine and feces that they leave behind can remain infectious.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nesting material, feces and urine can be considered free of dangerous viruses within one week following the elimination of a rodent infestation within a home. However, in order to be sure that all rodent activity in a home has ceased, homeowners should place numerous traps around their home for at least one week. If no further rodents are captured during this period, then homeowners can consider their homes safe for post-infestation cleaning. That being said, homeowners must continue to take precautions while cleaning their home in order to avoid health issues caused by dead and decaying rodents, their bodily waste and nesting materials.
Each room within a formerly rodent-infested home should be aired out for a period of 30 minutes before cleaning begins. The space to be cleaned should be ventilated by opening all nearby doors and windows, and homeowners should attempt to remove all visible droppings and urine stains first. While cleaning, it is important that homeowners do not kick up dust by vacuuming or aggressively sweeping, as rodent waste and nesting materials in the dust can be inhaled this way. Before sweeping, all surfaces should be wiped down with disinfectant (water and bleach). If dead rodents, nesting material and/or their bodily waste is visible on a surface, these too should be thoroughly sprayed. After spraying down dead rodents, the carcass should be placed in a sealed Ziploc bag before being placed into a tightly sealed garbage bin.
