German, Oriental & American Cockroach Species
Throughout Philadelphia, there are three more common species of cockroaches scurrying through the darkness, as most cockroaches are nocturnal. They are the Oriental cockroach, the German cockroach, and the American cockroach. Cockroaches in general have been around since prehistoric times and there are thousands of species throughout the world.
1. German Cockroach. Most commonly found raiding kitchens; German cockroaches are often introduced to homes in boxes or other such transportation. They can range from ½”- 5/8” by adulthood and are light brown or tan in color.
2. Oriental Cockroach. Oriental Cockroaches are sometimes referred to as “water bugs” because of their preference to moist conditions, often living in the sewer system. They are typically black to a reddish color and are notably shiny. Oriental cockroaches reach up to an inch long by the time they are full grown adults. If they make their way inside people’s homes they are usually found in basements and crawl spaces.
3. American Cockroach. By far the biggest cockroach in the United States, cockroaches are about 1 1/2 inches long at full grown adulthood. They are usually reddish brown in coloring and can fly but are very awkward in doing so. Being one of the fastest running insects around, they prefer to run when given the opportunity. They favor warm and humid conditions to live in and are often found near hot pipes and other high temperature areas. If they do make their way into homes and businesses, they will often hide under appliances.
Cockroaches Cause Diseases & Health Problems
Cockroaches are notorious for their nonchalant ways as to what they eat and what they way crawl through. Because they are one of the filthier living insects around, they easily pick up and carry diseases, germs and bacteria such as salmonellosis, gastroenteritis and dysentery. Simply walking along on surfaces where you prepare your food can spread what cockroaches carry. If you spot one or two cockroaches in your home or business that could actually be a tale-tell sign there is an infestation brewing in your home or business and professional care is optimal.
