Eastern Subterranean Termite
Termites cause over a billion dollars of damage each year to structures across the United States. There are many species of termites found in the United States, including subterranean, drywood, damp wood and desert termites.
- Termites are social insects with the queen instructing the workers and solider termites through the release of pheromones
- Most species swarm in the spring and closely resemble swarming pavement ants. Swarming termites lose their wings quickly and these discarded wings are usually found in piles near where they swarm
- The worker termites are the termites that actually damage wood and feed the other members of the colony
- Termites move about in mud shelter tubes that hold in the high humidity that termites need to survive
Fun Fact: A protozoan that is found in the worker termites’ gut is actually responsible for breaking down the cellulose material in the wood for food. Termites transfer the digested food to other termites through a process called trophalaxis.
