Clothes Moths Eating Your Expensive Clothes?
We at Pest Control Technicians have seen a growing number of requests for treating for Clothes Moth infestations. We always get the same questions from our clients, why did I get these bugs”?
With winter coming to an end now is a good time to help prevent clothes moth infestations. Moths are easy to take home. You hang your coat in a coat room at your favorite restaurant and one climbs off someone else’s coat onto yours and hides under the collar. Travel, sleepovers and most other social interactions can easily transfer clothes moth infestations.
We collectively seem to have forgotten what Grandma knew about how to store woolens during the warmer months of the year. Years ago people had fewer items of clothing so they had to take better care of their clothing. Proper storage is the best way to defeat clothes moths. First, clean all woolen items before storage. Clothes moths are attracted to soiled clothing since perspiration leaves minerals on the clothing that are attractive to moths. Store woolens in sealed plastic containers with moth balls or crystals following the directions on the container. This is still the very best method for preventing clothes moth damage.
A word on using cedar for clothes moth prevention. Cedar oils do work to kill clothes moths but only in high concentrations. This means that the cedar blocks that are sold in stores to hang in closets are usually not large enough to reach a level of concentration to kill clothes moths. If you have a cedar lined closet you should apply cedar oil to the wood each year before storage. Remember it’s not the wood that kills moths; it is the evaporating oil that is toxic to moths.
