Fear. We’ve all experienced the jolt, the sudden racing heart, the tensed muscles. Some fears are instinctual responses, designed to protect us from danger and enable our species to survive. But most fears are learned from our
There are many different types of phobias, from public speaking to enclosed spaces or a fear of heights. But after comparing multiple lists and statistics, the fear of spiders, arachnophobia, was on every single one of them. experiences, creating phobias that wouldn’t naturally cause fear.
Arachnophobia is without a doubt one of the most prevalent phobias, with an estimated 55% of women and 18% of men affected by it in America. Numerous urban legends have emerged over the years around the irrational fear of spiders. From laying eggs under the skin to swallowing spiders while you sleep, people have come up with countless ways to inspire more fear in these little creatures. Luckily, the majority of these myths are completely false.
One of the most disturbing spider myths is that you are never, at any given time, more than three feet from a spider. This actually originated from arachnologist Norman Platnic, who once said that, “Wherever you sit as you read these lines, a spider is probably no more than a few yards away.” Although this could sometimes be the case, especially if you’re in nature, this statement has certainly been exaggerated over time.
There are numerous other spider myths that have been confused with fact. Claims like most spiders fangs are too small to bite humans, along with daddy-longlegs having the worst venom of all spiders, and that you swallow an average of four spiders every year while you sleep. All of these are untrue, and while most spiders can bite, they rarely do bite humans. The legend of lethal daddy-longleg venom is completely false, with absolutely no scientific bases. And while it is technically possible for you to swallow a live spider, it is highly unlikely; spiders have no desire to be near humans and certainly do not want to be in your mouth.
