Mice, Rat and Meadow Vole Control
Walt Disney got it all wrong!
Rodent populations are high everywhere. From rural suburban counties to center city Philadelphia rodents are a huge problem for residents. In suburban areas, rodents will enter homes in search of food, warmth or harborage, and once inside they will nest close to any food sources that they find. Rarely does a rodent that invades a structure ever leave on their own since where there are people, there are abundant food sources. Our homes and commercial buildings are very well suited for rodents to enter and move about in buildings. Rodents like dark confined spaces such as pipe and wiring voids, and floor and ceiling voids as well. All rodents in our area except for meadow voles are great climbers, it is not unusually for us to have to design a treatment program for a 30 story structure in Philadelphia where the rodents are all the way up to the roof!
Stop Rodents from Spreading Contamination and Disease
Rodents also communicate with each other via pheromones that are left behind in rodent urine and feces. Rodents can tell if another rodent has passed along an area by using their sense of smell. They also use pheromones to find each other for mating purposes and to indicate which rodents are the dominant individuals in a nest. An individual can leave almost 1000 urine droplets a day in the areas that it travels. They can also leave almost 100 fecal droppings in one day as well. This is how a small numbers of rodents can easily contaminate large amounts human food sources.
Rodents are vectors for lots of nasty diseases including Plague, Lyme disease, Hantavirus, Dysentery and all types of food poisoning. Rodents also cause destruction and sometimes death by chewing into electrical wiring inside wall voids in homes. It is believed that the majority of unexplained home fires are caused by rodents gnawing on electrical wires and causing fire starting short circuits.
Mice will range only about 15 to 30 feet away from their nesting area
- Rats are larger rodents and have a range of well over 300 feet
- A baby mouse can enter a hole the size of your little finger
- A baby rat can enter a holes the size of your thumb
- Meadow voles rarely enter homes but are a destructive pest on the exterior by damaging expensive landscaping and lawns
