Brown Dog Tick
The brown dog tick and other species of ticks are found throughout the US and the world, and are responsible for spreading a number of diseases including Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever.
- The flattened body of a tick allows the female tick to engorge herself with blood from the host, expanding in size significantly when feeding is accomplished.
- Prefers indoor environments such as homes. Will find cracks and crevices in homes near pet bedding to lay eggs.
- Immature ticks called “seed ticks” will also feed on animals but feed on different areas of the animal than adults.
- A female can lay up to 3000 eggs and will die after egg laying is accomplished.
Fun Fact: Female ticks will also lay their eggs up high in a room in areas such as where walls and ceilings meet.
